The Confederate Whitworth Sharpshooters
John A. Morrow
First appearing in 1989, this book was
rapidly a much sought after favorite among Civil War historians, collectors,
and even military snipers. The book was required reading for sniper
candidates of the Chattanooga, Tennessee S.W.A.T. police department.
Limited to 1000 copies, the book quickly became a collector's item.
Now, the second edition is available
and again, is limited to only 1000 copies. Revised and with additional
photographs and text, the book will certainly become a rarity much like the
first edition.
Here are what a few historians and
reviewers have said about the book:
"There are a number of sharp
close-up photographs of Whitworth rifles, scopes, bullets, molds, gun
tools, etc. A series of sketches completes the visual aids.
The text is heavy with quoted material from a wide variety of sources,
providing the reader with a rich and exciting narrative."

Wiley Sword, author of Sharpshooter: Hiram Berdan:
His Famous Sharpshooters; Embrace an Angry Wind: The Confederacy's Last
Hurrah: Spring Hill, Franklin, & Nashville; Shiloh: Bloody April; Southern
Invincibility: A History of the Confederate Heart
"Based upon his personal
experience with the 101st Airborne and Special Forces, Morrow provides a
rare insight involving the activities of the most elite of Confederate
soldiers, those few individuals selected from various units who were the
best shots and most courageous, to be given the special honor and
responsibility of carrying the deadliest rifle in the army. These
few deadly sharpshooters were a key component in altering the very nature
of the war and foreshadowed the modern combat so familiar to today's
riflemen."
"Although most students of the
Civil War have heard of the activities of the Confederate Whitworth
sharpshooters, little has been written of these men or the remarkable
weapon they carried. This vacuum of history has finally been filled
with the publication of The Confederate Whitworth Sharpshooters by John A.
Morrow. His book stands to be the definitive work on this
fascinating piece of Confederate history."
